GRLSAVAGE (RE)DEFINED
GRLSAVAGE (RE)DEFINED
If you look up savage in the dictionary, you will find definitions that include words like untamed… not domesticated… uncontrolled… not civilized.
Words that don’t typically go hand-in-hand with being a girl.
Instead, from the moment a girl enters the world, she is told to be gentle, that’s too dangerous, don’t get dirty, that’s not ladylike.
Somewhere along the way, expressions such as like a girl and girly became widely used to describe the abilities and personality of our gender; essentially a preset definition of what our interests should be and what our capabilities could be.
We have been placed in a box… that is usually pink… and soft.
But times they are a changing. There are no longer predetermined characteristics for what it means to be a girl. Only we define ourselves.
And we choose new words.
Civilized
1: marked by well-organized laws and rules about how people behave with each other
2: showing concern for what is correct according to social rules
Nope, nope, nope. We do not stay within the boundaries that society puts around us. We live by our own rules. We are not civilized.
Domesticated
1: adapted over time from a wild or natural state to life in close association with and to the benefit of humans
2: made fit for domestic life: adapted to life in a household
3: brought to the level of ordinary people
Not going to happen. We will not be adapted for anyone’s benefit but our own. We are far from ordinary. We are not domesticated.
Tamed
1: to bring under control
2: to deprive of spirit
3: to tone down: soften
Ha! Our spirit cannot be restrained. There is no toning us down. Our drive and our passion cannot be confined. We are untamed.
Uncontrolled
1: happening or done without being stopped, slowed, or controlled
2: not conducted or maintained in accordance with fixed rules, restraints, or procedures
You bet. We tirelessly pursue what we want. No one holds us back, not even ourselves. We are uncontrolled.
So watch out world.
The “guy section” of the gym is now open for all. Kettlebells and sand bags are gender neutral. Fight like a girl is something to strive for. Skate parks are now coed. The waves are getting a big dose of estrogen. We are not strangers to power tools. And we are climbing mountains – literally and figuratively.
Because we are redefining what it means to be like a girl… what it means to be girly.
That definition is not tomboy.
It is GRLSAVAGE.
